They are motivated by what they want and are untouched by the feelings of those around them.

If things dont go their way they make all the right moves so that they achieve the results they want and they usually get what they want at the expense of those around them. Such a person is the main character in this book, Charles. The story is a continuation of his lifes story from a previous book, Deception by Marriage. That book dealt was the story of a man and woman who use marriages as a method of getting what they want out of life.

They have no regard for the human tragedy they leave behind. They have no sympathy or concern for the people around them. Divorce and aban-donment are used as tools and a convenient method of getting in and out of situations that no longer interest them. The children as well as spouses they leave behind are of no concern to them as they go through life searching for what they feel will satisfy them for the moment.

This book is about the interrelationships between Charles and the people around him are all designed by him so that he gets what he wants. The story takes place in California and Coopers-town, New York. The main story unfolds as Charles leaves on vacation. His movements are all designed around his plans to increase his wealth while setting up a new life for himself in Cooperstown. His views on life change slightly during his life but his motivation remains the same namely, whats good for him to the exclusion of all others.

As always everything falls into place for him to achieve his goals.
